Jeremy Kidwell

Serving in Taiwan, our family works with special needs, youth, and local families, creating community and sharing our faith through partnerships in sports, music, and character development.
Our vision is to see a community of peers with shared values for the next generation and those with special needs: teamwork, healthy competition, creativity, perseverance, and identity. Reminding each other of who we are and what we do, our work puts values to action by creating community, resources, and programs to support the cause of others.
Through relationship building, our hope and prayer is to befriend, support, and connect families to local churches, organizations, and individuals who will walk together with them through the challenges they face.
Our Story
Looking back over the years, I have noticed a storyline in my personal and family journey with God. Many times when reading the Biblical lives of faith, we forget that in between the lines, there are decades of ups and downs, twists and turns, before things start to make sense.
My college education in California and China was a time of many conversations with God and mentors, discovering the reality that in heaven’s perspective, there is no clear line between the “secular and the sacred” — it is all holy to the Lord.
I believe my last 20 years — an undergrad and graduate focus on community development, my multi-cultural roots, and non profit background -- is an invitation to partner with God. To join Him, and his heart for the youth and families of Taiwan, through ministry with the special needs organization Taiwan Sunshine.
My family will be part of their team to build up a community of young adults, individuals, families, and churches who see this vision as something more than “community service” — but instead realize the honor and privilege it is to walk along the special needs community.
For myself and my dad, sports have been a way we have been able to build friendships with people of all different backgrounds and cultures. In China, my dad was able to use his experience and passion for cycling to create a bike shop as a space for relationship and community. In more recent years, he has been involved with special needs bicycles, and had the chance to see the joy of "the ride" for individuals who otherwise never would be able to ride a bike, or experience such a form of mobility. For me, since my youth, I've been blessed with many friends on the soccer field - coaches and players from all ages and abilities (from befriending the Taiwanese National mental health Soccer team coach, training with the Guangzhou Province Deaf & Mute Team in China, and friendships I still maintain from high school and college days!).
My experience with special needs families and individuals in both Asia and the US have been a way God has spoken to me — regardless of our title (or lack of title!), our ability to perform Christian “service” or produce “results” from our job — God sees us the same. He sees us as His children, not valued more or less by what we can “contribute”.
Finally, as a believer, I am constantly reminded of the reality that in eternity, these individuals will be "raised in glory" just like us! They will forever be amazingly functional, beautiful, full of life and creative potential. Now we only see them dimly. Yet facing such hardship and challenge, they choose not to give up. I hope when we step into eternity and meet these individuals it will be a day of reunion and joy, seeing them for who they truly are and have always been.
This unreached population are in such need of something more than a "handout" or "event", but are looking for ongoing love, support, and relationship (as we all do!).
